Disney Is Killing It at the Box Office This Year

We’ve reached the halfway point in the year and it may already be time to crown Disney as the box office champ of 2016. Between the five movies released so far (The Finest Hour, Zootopia, The Jungle Book, Captain America: Civil War, and Alice Through the Looking Glass), the media giant has already brought in more than $3.2 billion worldwide. For movie executives, the box office just may be the Happiest Place on Earth at the moment.

Disney’s fuller pockets were undoubtedly helped by the surprise hit Zootopia, which managed to dethrone Deadpool and break Frozen’s opening weekend record by pulling in $73.7 million back in March. Of course, nothing has topped Captain America: Civil War and its $1.1 billion total so far, but Finding Dory—due out in July—will try to give the superhero flick a run for its money.

And while blockbusters like Suicide Squad and Independence Day: Resurgence will likely bring in a few bucks, Disney’s stacked lineup will continue to terrorize other studios with Moana, Doctor Strange, and Rogue One all set for release in the second half of the year.
