Get the Midnight Mint Mocha Frappuccino at Starbucks Happy Hour on Friday

There’s an unlikely character in the latest addition to the Starbucks Frappuccino lineup — a whimsical parade that includes the Unicorn, Dragon, and Mermaid Frapp — and it goes by the name Midnight Mint Mocha Frappuccino. This new extra-dark beverage was revealed, along with a limited resurrection of Frappuccino Happy Hours, in a surprise announcement on the Starbucks Newsroom website on Tuesday. Both will be available for a limited time only — the Frapp is available throughout the summer and the Frappuccino Happy Hour begins Friday and goes until May 14.

Unlike the custom riffs on the Unicorn Frapp — like the Dragon Frapp and the Mermaid Frapp — the Midnight Mint Mocha Frappuccino is officially sanctioned by Starbucks. Next to these vibrant and sometimes unbearably sweet Frapps, the Midnight is a medley of layers — a darker, richer layers of “extra-dark cocoa blended with coffee, milk, and ice, infused with cooling mint sugar crystals” and a whipped cream layer in the middle and on top.

While this Midnight Mocha Frapp seems like an about-face from the trending mythical creature-inspired Frapps, the coffeemaker’s beverage development manager, Ryan Coombes, insists otherwise: “People are gravitating toward vibrant colors. … Jet black is filling the void in unexpected places.”

The dark hue was inspired both by a burgeoning food trend on social media (e.g. “black macarons,” “charcoal ice cream”) and by “thoughts of dark starry nights, looking up at the sky with a cool summer breeze” says Jennica Robinson, a member of the Starbucks beverage development team. But despite being dark, it’s still a cold Frappuccino with a minty flavor, so it’s bound to be refreshing AF.

Also announced Tuesday: The classic S’mores Frappuccino is back to get you in the summer spirit. Meaning if ever there is a time to get the taste of sweet summer in the form of a S’mores Frappuccino or embracing the “thoughts of dark starry nights, looking up at the sky with a cool summer breeze” then Friday will be the day.

The Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino Is Real & It’s Here!

The Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino was announced to the world, and it’s going to make your week absolutely magical.

Right at the end of last week, rumors started swirling that something spectacular might — might — be on the way: A brightly-colored Frappuccino filled with something called “Pink Powder” and topped with literal “Unicorn Dust.” The rumblings of this mystical drink came courtesy of a number of baristas posting on Reddit and Instagram, and naturally, once the word got out, the internet had a field day with it all. Admittedly, I was a skeptic; Bustle reached out to Starbucks, who had nothing to share at the time, and knowing how easy it is to fake a rainbow-colored Starbucks drink (hi there, April Fool’s Day), I took the stance of, “I’ll believe it when I see it.”

Now, though? Consider me a believer: Starting on April 19, the Unicorn Frappuccino will be available at participating Starbucks stores in the United States, Canada, and Mexico for a limited time. I do mean limited, by the way; it’s only going to be around through Sunday, April 23 or while supplies last. Magic, after all, is fleeting.

According to a press release, the Unicorn Frappuccino is a “blended crème” drink — which means it’s not a coffee-based Frapp — made with “a sweet dusting of pink powder”; mango syrup is blended up with the drink before being “layered with a pleasantly sour blue drizzle.” It’s topped with vanilla whipped cream and “a sprinkle of sweet pink and sour blue powder topping” — so basically, it sounds like a Sweet Tart in a cup.

Perhaps even more intriguing, though, is this: The Frappuccino… changes as you drink it it. The press release notes that at first, it looks purple shot through with “swirls of blue”; when it’s in this form, it tastes “sweet and fruity.” If you stir it, though, its color and flavor both change, becoming pink in appearance and “tangy and tart” in taste. Apparently the more you swirl, the bigger the transformation. And, I mean, who doesn’t like playing with their food? (No one, is the answer. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying.)

The Unicorn Frappuccino will be available at participating Starbucks locations throughout the United States, as well as in Canada and Mexico, from April 19 through April 23. Grab yours. Experience the magic.

Krispy Kreme Teams Up With Ghirardelli To Bring Us Ridiculously Decadent Doughnuts

New Krispy Kreme doughnuts, inspired by the popular Ghirardelli squares, will be available in select stores in the United States and Canada starting April 3. A press release announcing the confections drips with words like “indulgent,” “decadent” and the somewhat-curious catchphrase “OMGhirardelli.”

Jackie Woodward, Chief Marketing Officer of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, explains, “Uniting premium chocolate enthusiasts and our beloved doughnut fans, these doughnuts offer an OMG-worthy reward any time of day—whether you’re celebrating life’s everyday moments or in search of a delightful afternoon indulgence.”

In additional to celebrating the little things in life (before death comes in the form of a clogged artery), Krispy Kreme has also liberated us of the burden of decisions, boasting that customers will no longer have the make the Sophie’s choice between “sweet or salty, chocolate or pastry.”

As for the doughnuts themselves, they do sound pretty tantalizing. The Mint Chocolate doughnut will be filled with White Mint Kreme filling “inspired by” the Ghirardelli Mint Chocolate squares, dipped in chocolate icing, decorated with green icing and topped with Ghirardelli mini chocolate chips. The Sea Salt Caramel doughnut, filled with sea salt caramel filling and dipped in chocolate, is topped with a blend of amber sugar, salt sprinkle and Ghirardelli chocolate chips. Are they trying to kill us?

McDonald’s to Sell Big Mac, McChicken and Filet-O-Fish Sauces

McDonald’s has announced that it plans to sell the sauces used on its Big Mac, McChicken and Filet-O-Fish as standalone products. The company revealed the development, which is currently restricted to Canada, on its Twitter feed yesterday, saying the sauces would be out this spring, although no firm date was stated. This news comes soon after they gave away 10,000 Big Mac sauces to celebrate the launch of the Grand Mac and Mac Jr.

It’s been a year of innovations for McDonald’s as it recently started testing its mobile ordering system.

Starbucks Now Has Whiskey Barrel Aged Coffee

It’s not a very well kept secret that the best coffee from Starbucks comes from their roastery in Seattle. Their Seattle exclusive offerings are expanding into Willy Wonka territory because Starbucks now has whiskey barrel aged coffee. Each batch of the Starbucks Reserve Whiskey Barrel Aged Sulawesi beans are frequently hand-rotated over the course of a few weeks while they’re living in Woodinville Whiskey barrels that were freshly emptied. This process insures that all of the beans get infused with whiskey flavor because of their contact with the barrel, but it’s worth noting that the roasting process itself cooks off all the alcohol. The barrel aged beans will be available by themselves or in one of two specialty drinks: a vanilla sweetened cold brew and a “con creme” drink with cascara sugar. Unfortunately, all your Starbucks Reserve Whiskey Barrel Aged Sulawesi drinking dreams are crushed unless you live in Seattle or know someone there who can ship you some.

Starbucks Will Offer Ice Cream & Coffee Mixes Very Soon

As Business Insider reports, coffeehouse juggernaut Starbucks is about to add even more sugary substances to their menu. In the very near future, the ultra-popular chain will begin serving ice cream products at over 100 locations across the United States. The Starbucks spin on ice cream will come in the form of a new Roastery Affogato menu — for those unfamiliar, Affogato is an Italian-born concoction that mixes espresso shots with ice cream scoops.

By the end of this week, ten high-end Reserve bar Starbucks stores in Washington, DC, Boston and Los Angeles will feature offerings such as the Classic Affogato and chocolate bitters-enhanced Cold Brew Malt — prices will range from $6 to $8.50 USD. At various Orange County, California locations, lower-priced Affogato items built from moderate, less luxurious ingredients will also begin to pop up on menus. While the original Affogato products from Starbucks have been successful at the company’s flagship Seattle Roastery, time will tell if the products will take over the mainstream.

Grab Your Significant Other And Share Some Of These Valentine’s Day Specials And Meal Deals

People love to go out to dinner for Valentine’s Day, and that means restaurants are competing for your business. If what you and your significant other share is a love of frugality, the holiday is a fine time to find discounts and deals on meals out. Or heart-shaped pizzas.

Free Food With a Catch

Auntie Anne’s: Buy one, get one free heart-shaped pretzels (see below) on Feb. 14 as long as you’re a member of its Pretzel Perks rewards program. You need to have already downloaded the app and joined the program before Feb. 12.

Mimi’s: Get a free entrée on your next visit after leaving a note for someone you love on the chain’s Facebook page. There’s also a deal where couples can get a three-course meal for free if they get engaged at Mimi’s on Valentine’s Day, if they have the ring on hand. Couples who get engaged at Mimi’s restaurants on the holiday can post a photo on the chain’s Facebook page to enter to win a $500 gift card to the restaurant, or anyone can enter the drawing by following the instructions on the contest page.

Qdoba: The “Qdoba For a Kiss” promotion is essentially a buy one, get one promotion where you get the freebie if you smooch a loved one. Or a stranger. Or yourself, presumably, if you’re eating two burritos.

Schlotsky’s: The chain will give away 100,000 free bottles of hot sauce at its restaurants while supplies last. (Warning: auto-play video at that link.) Not all locations are participating, so check before you go.

Shoney’s: Customers who get the “all you care to eat” Food Bar will get free hot fudge cake. The Valentine’s Day version of the bar costs $24.99 per couple, and $12.99 for singles.

Holiday-Themed Stunt Food

Auntie Anne’s: They’re calling these “heart-shaped” pretzels, but they just look like slightly narrower pretzels than normal to us. They’ll only be available on Feb. 14.

Dunkin’ Donuts: They have heart-shaped donuts, as well as an Instagram-based contest where people are encouraged to share their love stories that involve Dunkin’ Donuts, and we are fairly certain they have to describe the love between two people, not a person and a donut.

Papa John’s, Papa Murphy’s, Pizza Hut, and Valentino’s: All of these chains are reportedly offering heart-shaped pizzas this year; check with your local restaurant to make sure they’re taking part first. Local pizzerias or your favorite regional chains might be taking part as well, but prepare for disappointment.

What we’re saying is that maybe you shouldn’t get your hopes up too much if you order one of these.

If you lived in Israel, you and your sweetheart could enjoy a special Burger King Adult Meal promotion, which includes two Whoppers, two fries, two beers, and what BK refers to as “A romantic ADULT TOY.”

If you know of another holiday deal at a national or regional chain that we left out, please let us know!
